Collection: Reclaimed Metal Frames - Mark Hilltout
Mark Hilltout recovers the old corrugated metal sheets in the townships, where they served as roofs or load-bearing structures of the houses. The metal is brought to his studio in Woodstock (Cape Town), where an initial cleaning job takes place.
The story of each piece of sheet metal, with its carvings, splinters, stains and burns is unique: putting them together and working them is a continual stimulus for the artist, and a fascinating discovery for the observer.
"For many, corrugated sheets are a material to be used only in the absence of alternatives; in my mind, on the other hand, they are a unique resource, which gives value to a work that only time can do. The result of immense complexity and impact" - Mark Hilltout
