Kanonkop winery is located in the red wine bowl, the restricted “red wine bowl” of Stellenbosch, the heart of South Africa's best winemaking. The estate covers 125 hectares, 100 of which are planted with vines, and enjoys a perfect microclimate thanks to the sea breezes of False Bay.

Kanonkop is often referred to as the “Home of Pinotage.” The South African winery is famous for its high-quality Pinotages made from old vines and traditional methods.

Kanonkop is also internationally known for its philosophy of maintaining old vines. Some of Kanonkop's Pinotage vines are more than 60 years old, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and other varieties are more than 30-40 years old. These old vines naturally produce a smaller crop, but with a higher quality of grapes, resulting in more concentrated and complex wines.

Kanonkop specializes in Pinotage, an indigenous South African wine for which it has received many international awards.

In 2024 Kanonkop Wine Estate ranked 12th on the list of “50 Most Admired Wine Brands” according to the annual report of “Drinks International.” It was also recognized as the “Most Admired Wine Brand in Africa & the Middle East.”
