Captured Serenity: Seascape, Bushes and Contemplative Minimalism

The Perfect Balance Between Marine and Terrestrial Elements

The Frame

Work 104 is the quietest in the collection, and it is so from the frame itself. The antique wood is painted in an ivory that is neither white nor beige — it is something in between, warm like the early morning light, devoid of any chromatic assertiveness. A shade that does not demand attention, but holds it.

The surface is relatively compact compared to the more dramatic cracking of previous works: here time has acted with greater discretion, leaving a uniform texture where the paint has absorbed the years without giving way spectacularly. The element of artisanal uniqueness lies elsewhere: the evident striations on the top and bottom sides, probably generated by a hand-cut of the wood. They are not defects — they are the opposite: they are the signature of a manual process that no industrial production can replicate. Each stripe is a parallel groove that runs along the side of the frame like the lines of a musical staff, introducing a subtle but perceptible linear rhythm.

The inner edges show the natural beige of the wood that is not painted — a minimal but sophisticated chromatic transition between the ivory of the frame and the photographic image. Even in the absence of a formal mat, this natural margin serves a similar function: it slows down the gaze, creates a pause, before delivering it to the photograph.

The horizontal rectangular format — 28 × 33 cm — is the first in the collection to develop in a landscape sense, and this choice is not accidental: the lateral breath of the format perfectly accommodates the marine horizon of the image contained.

The Image

The black and white photograph is one of the most classic and at the same time most successful compositions of the entire collection: a low-angle view, from among the bushes on the shore, towards a perfectly calm sea, without wind, without ripples, without events.

The structure of the image follows a principle of horizontal layering: at the bottom, the grasses and bushes of the dune with their plant textures; in the center, a middle band where the vegetation opens up and reveals the waterline; at the top, the sky — low, gray, devoid of dramatic clouds — that presses on the horizon with a quiet pressure. The marine horizon is the true line of balance of the work: it divides the world into two equal and mirrored halves, sky and water, both gray, both still.

The low point of view — from among the bushes — introduces an element of intimacy and refuge. It is not the view of the sailor or the tourist standing on the shore: it is the view of someone who stopped, lowered themselves, found a place among the grasses and looked at the sea from there. A perspective that suggests discreet presence, contemplation, belonging to the landscape rather than observing it.

The title, Stillness, by sea and by land, is at the same time descriptive and poetic: it describes the weather condition (dead calm), but extends it to the terrestrial dimension, to the still vegetation, to the motionless air. It is a total stillness, which has nothing oppressive — on the contrary, it is the stillness one seeks, the one for which one gets up early or waits for the evening.

Color Palette

The palette of work 104 is the most monochromatic and meditative of the entire collection. Everything converges towards a range of warm and cold neutrals that balance each other without ever creating contrast.

The ivory of the frame introduces the warmest note of the whole: a white that tends slightly towards honey-yellow, instinctively associated with diffused natural light, aged paper, natural unbleached fabrics. The natural wood beige on the inner edges slightly darkens this note, bringing an accent of light earth that anchors everything to materiality.

The photograph instead operates in the opposite direction: the grays are cold, almost silver. The calm sea reflects the uniform gray sky, and the sky absorbs the sea — the two planes are read almost like a mirror, with the horizon marking the fold. The vegetation in the foreground introduces the darkest grays and the richest textures, but even there the temperature is cool, Nordic, Atlantic.

The meeting point between the warm frame and the cold photograph is one of the most successful balances of the collection: the ivory of the frame does not warm the image, it does not distort it — it contains it, it warms it just at the edge, like the light of a room illuminates the windowsill of a window overlooking the sea.

Notes for furnishing and placement

The meditative and horizontal nature of this work makes it particularly suitable for spaces of rest and reflection: bedroom, above the headboard, in a designer bathroom, in a reading area. It is one of those pieces that work best slightly below eye level, where they are looked at from below upwards — exactly as the image itself looks at the sea.

The horizontal 28 × 33 cm format makes it ideal as a central element of a linear wall composition flanked by objects of similar dimensions — mirrors, shelves, other photographs in an analogous format. Alone, it has the strength of a meditation painting; in a group, it offers the horizontal breath that balances vertical compositions.

Related furnishing materials: raw linen, natural white cotton, matte white ceramic, natural ash wood, limestone, rush, wicker. Perfect for interiors in coastal, Japandi, sober Provençal or temperate Nordic style. Rare is its ability to adapt effortlessly both to a contemporary urban apartment and to a seaside vacation home.
