Langbult Steen Chenin Blanc - Simonsig

IN SHORT

📍 Stellenbosch · 100% Chenin Blanc
Old vines · Spontaneous fermentation and aging in French oak

Why we like it

It is one of Simonsig's most representative Chenin Blancs. Coming from a single vineyard planted in 1987, it combines precision, depth and extraordinary evolutionary capacity, demonstrating the full potential of South Africa's iconic grape variety.

Wine profile

The aroma opens with lemon blossoms, green apple, and yellow plum, then evolves towards ripe peach, apricot, and lemon zest, with slight tropical nuances. On the palate, it is taut and vibrant, supported by brilliant acidity and a creamy texture derived from aging on lees. The oak elegantly accompanies the wine, imparting structure without overpowering the purity of the fruit. It can be enjoyed now or evolve in the bottle for 5-8 years.

Simonsig's Signature

The grapes come from the estate's oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard, cultivated by the Malan family since 1987. Harvesting is carried out in four successive passes to pick each bunch at the perfect degree of ripeness. After a gentle whole-bunch pressing, the must ferments spontaneously in French oak barrels, where the wine ages for 12 months on fine lees with regular bâtonnage, acquiring complexity, depth, and an elegant texture.

Pairing

Ideal with grilled fish, shellfish, white meats, roasted poultry, and bloomy rind cheeses like Camembert or Époisses.

Serving

Serve at 14-16°C, avoiding excessively low temperatures to enhance its aromatic complexity.

Origin

Wine of Origin Stellenbosch, South Africa.

In the vineyard

The Langbult vineyard is located in the northern part of Stellenbosch, on ancient, deeply weathered shale soils. Planted in 1987, the old vines grow at an altitude of between 100 and 150 meters, protected from the strongest winds and facing northeast. The 2023 vintage was characterized by slow and steady ripening, favored by mild temperatures during the harvest period.

In the cellar

The grapes are harvested in four successive passes, at different ripeness levels, and vinified separately to increase the wine's complexity. After a soft whole-cluster pressing, the must ferments spontaneously in 300 and 400-liter French oak barrels (12% new). The wine ages for 12 months on its fine lees with regular bâtonnage, developing volume, elegance, and great aging potential.
