Chenin Blanc - Simonsig Wine Estate

Grape variety: 100% Chenin Blanc.

Chenin Blanc is part of Simonsig's DNA. The journey began with this iconic grape variety in 1968, when Chenin Blanc was first bottled and labeled under the Simonsig brand. Years of experience crafting this grape variety led to the creation of Langbult Steen, formerly known as Chenin Avec Chêne.

The Langbult Steen vineyard (which translates to “long hill Chenin Blanc”), from which the wine takes its name, has been certified as a Heritage Vineyard as of the 2022 vintage, ushering in a new era for this famous South African white wine.

Chenin Blanc with a pale straw color and greenish highlights. Lemon blossom, citrus, and white-fleshed fruit such as green apple and peach stand out on the nose, with hints of apricot, lemon zest, and a hint of tropical fruit. The lively acidity brings freshness to the palate, perfectly balancing the fruity notes. The oak is discreetly present, providing structure without overpowering the fruit.

Enjoyable already now, it can evolve well in the cellar for 5-8 years.

Food Pairings: Langbult Steen Chenin Blanc pairs wonderfully with simply grilled fish or chicken, as well as mature, creamy cheeses like Epoisse or Camembert Delewood Winelands. Avoid over-chilling.

Serving temperature: 14° - 16°

Stopper: Cork | Residual Sugar 3 g/l | TA 5.9 g/l | pH 3.32.

Origin

Wine of Origin South Africa, Stellenbosch.

In the vineyard

Located in the northern part of Stellenbosch, on ancient schist soils, this 6-hectare vineyard, tended by three generations of the Malan family, has been home to robust historic vines since 1987. Protected from the wind and well exposed to the northeast, it is located between 100 and 150 meters above sea level. After a particularly dry winter and spring, the rains of December 2022 reinvigorated the vines, promoting good fruit set. Mild temperatures during the harvest—one of the coolest in the last ten years—allowed for excellent grape ripening.

In the cellar

Grapes from the oldest Chenin Blanc vineyards were harvested at four different stages of ripeness and vinified separately to achieve aromatic complexity and balance. Whole-bunch pressing preserved freshness and elegance, while the riper, later-harvested grapes remained in contact with the skins for 6-8 hours to intensify the aromas. The must fermented spontaneously in French oak barrels (12% new), followed by 12 months of aging on the lees with bâtonnage during the first month, lending greater complexity and structure to this fabulous South African Chenin Blanc.
