Optima - Anthonij Rupert

IN SHORT

📍 Franschhoek & Darling · Bordeaux Blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec)
Elegant, complex and well-balanced red wine
20 months in French oak + 2 years bottle aging

Why we like it

The Optima interprets the grand Bordeaux style with a South African identity. The careful selection of grapes, the long aging process and the balance between structure and freshness create a refined wine, capable of captivating today and evolving beautifully over the years.

Wine profile

The nose opens with notes of blackberry, small berries, mocha and sweet spices. The palate is enveloping and velvety, with notes of black fruit pie, cherry, baking spices, and graphite. The oak aging is perfectly integrated and accompanies a long, elegant, and persistent finish.

The Anthonij Rupert signature

The Optima is born from a rigorous selection of vineyards between Franschhoek and Darling. Each variety is vinified and aged separately before the final blend, followed by two years of rest in the bottle: a choice that gives the wine extraordinary harmony and complexity.

Food pairing

Perfect with beef fillet, roasted lamb, braised meats, game, and aged cheeses.

Serving

Serve at 18°C in a large glass. It is recommended to decant about an hour before serving.

In the vineyard

The grapes come from selected vineyards in Franschhoek and Darling, grown on decomposed granite soils. The 2021 vintage, characterized by a cold and rainy winter followed by a slow and steady ripening, fostered the development of perfectly balanced grapes, rich in aromatic freshness and with excellent aging potential.

In the cellar

The grapes were hand-picked and transported to refrigerated cells before arriving at the winery, where they underwent a double optical sorting. Each variety was vinified separately in concrete and stainless steel tanks, with a post-fermentative maceration lasting up to five days. The wine aged for 20 months in 225-litre French barriques (30% new), followed by blending and a further two years of bottle aging before release.
