Kadette Cape Blend - Kanonkop Wine Estate

Varietal: Pinotage 44%, Merlot 29%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, Cabernet Franc 2%.

South African wine produced by Kanonkop, one of the most renowned wineries in the Stellenbosch wine region of South Africa, best known for producing Pinotage and other Bordeaux-style blends. Kadette Cape Blend is a true “Cape Blend,” a distinctive type of wine from South Africa. Cape Blends must include a significant percentage of Pinotage (South Africa's signature grape variety) combined with varieties traditionally used in Bordeaux blends, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This creates a wine that blends South African style with the classic elegance of French blends.

In the glass Kadette Cape Blend is a vibrant crimson hue, with complementary aromas of raspberries, black cherries, plums, cinnamon and cloves.

Soft, elegant tannins and fresh acidity are beautifully balanced with a vibrant burst of fruit on the palate. Juicy flavors of red and black fruits and a hint of chocolate dominate the lingering finish.

Table pairings: Excellent as a summer wine to accompany a good barbeque, or served with pizza, pasta dishes, roasts and chicken and burgers.

In the vineyard

The effects of the drought of the previous 3 years were still felt in 2019, despite more abundant rainfall: in 2019 the grapes were smaller in size, the harvest was smaller but of great quality.
Grape varieties from 5 to 30 years old. Modest additional irrigation. Average production 7 tons/ha.

In the cellar

After being harvested by hand in the early hours of the morning, the must is left to macerate on the skins for 3-5 days. Fermentation then takes place in open concrete tanks at a temperature of around 28°C. Kadette Cape Blend is then aged for 12-14 months in 225-liter French Nevers oak barriques that have been used once or twice before.
