Starting Blocks Chenin Blanc - Simonsig Wine Estate

IN BRIEF

📍 Stellenbosch · Chenin Blanc 100%
Unoaked vinification
Fermentation at 12-14 °C
Hand-harvested grapes

Why we like it

A straightforward and bright Chenin Blanc, with enough texture to avoid being simplistic. Citrus, apple, and tropical fruit are supported by lively acidity and a smoothness that makes it immediately enjoyable. We've chosen it as a reliable everyday white: versatile with food, recognizable, and able to showcase the grape varietal without resorting to oak.

Wine Profile

The entry is fresh, with lemon zest and green apple. Mid-palate, yellow peach, passion fruit, and pineapple emerge, accompanied by a slight creamy sensation. The acidity remains vibrant, preventing the fruit from becoming sweet. The finish is clean, balanced, and fruity, with good continuity.

The winery's signature

Chenin Blanc is the wine with which Simonsig began its history in 1968; the 2024 vintage marks the new name Starting Blocks. The grapes are hand-harvested, and some batches remain in contact with the skins overnight. After cold decantation, the must ferments slowly in stainless steel at 12-14 °C with selected yeasts to preserve the fruity component and freshness.

Food pairing

Pairs with salads with citrus and goat cheese, mussels, roast chicken, and grilled fish. Also excellent with spaghetti alle vongole, baked vegetables, and slightly creamy dishes.

Serving

Serve at 10-12 °C. Does not require aeration. Use a medium-sized white wine glass.

In the vineyard

The 2024 season will be remembered for many reasons. Excellent winter conditions were followed by a historic storm with extremely strong winds and torrential rains early in the season. Subsequently, a prolonged period of heat and drought resulted in the smallest harvest in the past twenty years in the Cape winelands due to small berry sizes and reduced bunch weights. The quality of the 2024 vintage will be memorable for many years to come.

In the cellar

The grapes were hand-picked and pressed. Some batches were left overnight in contact with the skins. The must was cold-settled until brilliantly clear. It was then inoculated with selected yeast strains known for producing very fruity wines. Fermentation temperature was maintained between 12°C and 14°C to ensure a slow fermentation and optimal production of fruit aromas.
