IN SHORT

📍 Stellenbosch · Cape Blend (Pinotage 62%, Cabernet Sauvignon 35%, Merlot 3%)
Iconic South African red
Aged 18 months in French oak

Why we like it

The Frans Malan represents the essence of Cape Blend: the personality of Pinotage meets the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon and the softness of Merlot. It is a wine that expresses Stellenbosch with precision, depth, and extraordinary balance, capable of evolving magnificently over the years.

Wine profile

The bouquet opens with blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum, accompanied by vanilla, sweet spices, dark chocolate and light notes of leather and cured meat. On the palate, it is rich and structured, with velvety tannins, perfectly integrated acidity and a long, elegant finish, in which fruit and spicy notes remain in perfect balance.

The Simonsig signature

First produced in 1991, this wine is dedicated to Frans Malan, founder of Simonsig and one of the pioneers of modern South African viticulture. Today, it remains one of the most authoritative expressions of Stellenbosch Cape Blend. See all Simonsig wines here.

Origin

Wine of Origin Stellenbosch, South Africa.

In the vineyard

The grapes come from selected Stellenbosch vineyards. The Pinotage is grown on Malmesbury shale with a northerly aspect, ideal for producing intense and fragrant fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon grows on granitic soils rich in clay and iron, which impart structure and depth. The Merlot comes from the highest and coolest parcels of the Simonsig estate, where slow ripening promotes elegance, fine texture and aromatic complexity.

In the cellar

The grapes were hand-picked and selected both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Each variety was vinified separately with two days of cold maceration. The Pinotage macerated for 6 days, the Cabernet Sauvignon for 15, and the Merlot for 13, with calibrated punch-downs and pump-overs. After malolactic fermentation in barriques, the wine aged for 18 months in 500-liter French oak barrels (30% new, 54% second-fill, and 16% third-fill), achieving great balance and elegance.
