Homestead Red Bordeaux Blend - Bellingham
IN SHORT
📍 Coastal Region · Merlot 80%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%
Bordeaux Blend
12 months in French oak (10% new barrels)
Why we like it
It's a Bordeaux Blend that focuses on balance rather than power. Merlot, the main component of the blend, lends softness and juiciness, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and depth. The result is an elegant, versatile, and immediately enjoyable red wine.
Wine profile
The bouquet combines red cherry, blueberry, and blackcurrant with elegant notes of tobacco, dark chocolate, licorice, and sweet spices from perfectly integrated oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and harmonious, with soft and juicy tannins, excellent fruit purity, and a silky, long, and persistent finish.
The Bellingham Signature
The Homestead line pays tribute to the historic Franschhoek estate where Bernard and Freda Podlashuk helped write some of the most important pages in South African viticulture. This Bordeaux Blend is made from hand-picked grapes and vinified with minimal intervention to enhance the character of the terroir. The 12-month aging in 300-liter French barrels, with 10% new wood, adds elegance and complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Food pairing
Perfect with grilled steak, roasted lamb, braised meats, rich pasta with ragù, and aged cheeses.
Serving
Serve at 16-18°C in a large glass. Decanting for about 30 minutes is recommended.

In the vineyard
In the vineyard
The Merlot comes from a vineyard in Darling, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, where the cool climate and constant breezes favour slow, aromatic ripening. The Cabernet Sauvignon, on the other hand, grows in Helderberg, Stellenbosch, where careful canopy management allows for perfectly ripe grapes, rich in colour, structure and aromatic intensity.
In the cellar
In the cellar
The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed, and selected before fermentation in stainless steel tanks using a low-intervention approach. Fermentation lasts 7 to 12 days with gentle pump-overs. The wine then ages for 12 months in 300-liter French oak barrels, 10% of which are new, developing complexity and balance without losing the fruit's expressiveness.
