1685 Pinotage - Boschendal Wine Estate

Pinotage on the nose presenting rich flavors of ripe and vibrant currants, spices, tobacco and plums. Pinotage that confirms the expectations of this typical South African varietal.

Food pairings: There are some wonderful South African cuisine dishes that pair perfectly with a Pinotage, such as bobotie, Cape Malay fish curry and beef potjies. Also try it with spiced lamb and vegetarian dishes.

Evolution: Pinotage perfect for consumption within the first 8 years, but with careful temperature-controlled storage its longevity will go far beyond that-only your patience will determine how long it will last.

In the vineyard

The grapes for this Pinotage are harvested by hand in early February. The fruit is grown on high quality sites in the Durbanville region. In these arid lands, bush-trained vines are selected to provide complexity, concentration and intensity.

In the cellar

Grapes are selected and then crushed in steel tanks. Pinotage grapes are cold macerated for 5 days before fermentation begins at 10°, after which fermentation begins and peaks at a temperature of 26°.
Regular pump-over is carried out during the active phase of fermentation up to 10 degrees Brix. After that, the pump-overs are reduced to ensure good extraction of tannins and color. After fermentation, the wine is pressed and matured in a combination of new and used barrels for 12 months.
