1685 Pinotage - Boschendal

IN SHORT

📍 Coastal Region · Pinotage 100%
12 months in French oak
South Africa's iconic grape variety

Why we like it

If there's one wine that tells the story of South Africa's identity, it's Pinotage. Boschendal offers an elegant and modern interpretation: intense yet balanced, rich in fruit, with perfectly integrated wood and that typical spicy note that makes this grape so recognisable. It's an ideal bottle for both those who want to discover Pinotage and those who already love it.

Wine Profile

On the nose, blackcurrant, ripe plum, and wild berries emerge, accompanied by sweet tobacco and spices. The palate is full and juicy, with a velvety texture supported by soft, well-integrated tannins. The fruit remains the protagonist throughout, leading to a long, savoury, and pleasantly spicy finish. A rich but never excessive Pinotage, which can be enjoyed immediately or evolve positively for over 8 years.

The Boschendal Signature

Boschendal interprets Pinotage with a style that prioritises elegance and balance. The grapes come from old dry-farmed bush vines in the Durbanville region, where the cool climate and well-drained soils allow for slow ripening and greater aromatic complexity. The 12-month ageing in new and used French oak barrels completes the wine without masking the authentic character of the grape variety.

Food Pairing

Perfect with grilled meats, lamb, braised dishes, barbecue, South African cuisine, beef or lamb curry, bobotie, and aged cheeses.

Serving

Serve at 16-18°C in a large glass. A brief aeration of about 30 minutes enhances its aromatic profile.

Origin

Wine of Origin Coastal Region, South Africa.

In the vineyard

The grapes come from selected vineyards in the Durbanville region, where traditional dry-farmed bush vines produce low yields and particularly concentrated bunches. The influence of the cool climate and the combination of warmer sites allow the Pinotage to develop aromatic intensity, balance, and a marked expression of the South African terroir.

In the cellar

After manual harvesting, the grapes are selected and undergo a five-day cold pre-fermentative maceration. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with regular pump-overs, calibrated to achieve a delicate extraction of color and tannins. The wine then ages for 12 months in a combination of new and used oak barrels, reaching a perfect balance between fruit, structure, and spice.
