AT A GLANCE

📍 Paarl · Shiraz 62%, Mourvèdre 35%, Viognier 3%
Rhône Valley-inspired blend
Aged in French oak (33% new barrels)

Why we like it

SMV is the South African interpretation of the famous Northern Rhône blend. The combination of Shiraz, Mourvèdre, and a small percentage of Viognier creates an intense yet refined wine, capable of combining power, elegance, and extraordinary aromatic complexity.

Wine profile

The bouquet expresses blackberry, raspberry, plum, and black cherry, accompanied by black pepper, black olives, violets, and sweet spices. On the palate, it is rich and enveloping, with a perfect balance of red and black fruit, velvety tannins, and a pleasant savory note that accompanies a long, elegant, and persistent finish.

Bellingham's signature

SMV originates from a single vineyard in Voor Paardeberg. Shiraz and Viognier are harvested and fermented together (co-fermentation), a traditional Côte-Rôtie technique that gives greater aromatic elegance and tannic finesse. After malolactic fermentation, the Mourvèdre is blended, and the wine completes its aging in French barriques, 33% of which are new.

Food pairing

Perfect with grilled lamb, barbecue ribs, game, braised meats, spicy Mediterranean cuisine, and aged cheeses.

Serving

Serve at 16-18°C. Decanting for about an hour is recommended.

Origin

Wine of Origin Paarl, South Africa.

In the vineyard

The grapes come from a single vineyard in Voor Paardeberg, in the Paarl region. The Shiraz is trellised, while the Mourvèdre grows as a bush vine. The weathered granite and shale soils promote slow ripening and an elegant aromatic profile. Manual vineyard management and the selection of the best bunches guarantee the highest quality grapes.

In the cellar

The Shiraz and Viognier are harvested and co-fermented at the same time, a practice inspired by the Côte-Rôtie tradition that increases aromatic complexity and finesse. After fermentation and malolactic in barrique, Mourvèdre is added. The wine then continues to age in French oak, with 33% new barrels, achieving a perfect balance between fruit, structure, and elegance.
