Old Vine Project Certification: What is it?

Heritage Vineyards in South Africa: the certification that enhances history, quality, and terroir.

When talking about South African wine, a term we increasingly encounter is Old Vineyards or Old Vines. This term isn't a minor detail: it represents a true seal of authenticity, history, and quality, guaranteeing a unique and unrepeatable wine.

What does “Old Vineyards” mean?

In South Africa, the Old Vine Project (OVP) certification is only awarded to vineyards documented to be at least 35 years old. It is therefore not simply a producer's declaration, but an official and registered recognition, created to protect and enhance a rare viticultural heritage.

Older vines have deeper roots, capable of exploring the soil extensively and resiliently, absorbing minerals and nutrients that give the wine complexity, aromatic concentration, and longevity. Furthermore, they produce smaller but higher-quality bunches, with a natural balance that reduces human intervention in the vineyard.

For those who buy South African wines, OVP certification means:

- Guarantee of authenticity : the wine really comes from certified old vines;

- Qualitative excellence : greater concentration and sensory complexity;

- Protection of biodiversity : the old vines preserve a unique genetic heritage;

- Sustainability : centuries-old vineyards are more resistant to drought and disease, requiring less treatment.

Timepiece Chenin Blanc – Jordan

Timepiece Sauvignon Blanc – Jordan

Less common than Chenin, a Sauvignon Blanc from old vines is an absolute rarity. Jordan has masterfully interpreted it, creating an intense, refined, and surprising white. A wine that disproves the cliché that Sauvignon Blanc must necessarily be young and immediate. Available here.

A curiosity about South African Old Vines

South Africa was the first country in the world to launch an official seal for historic vineyards, supported by a database dating back to 1900. Thanks to the work of the Old Vine Project, every old vineyard is catalogued and tracked, so that producers can protect a heritage that was at risk of disappearing, replaced by more productive plantings.

Today, those who choose a Heritage Vineyards certified bottle are not just buying a wine, but are participating in the preservation of a unique agricultural and cultural history.
